Have you ever wanted to learn some basic bushcraft skills? We are running a short introductory programme for The Big Skill. Each week can be booked as a separate day, or book all 4 weeks to get a good understanding of basic bushcraft skills.

About the Event

This is a 4-week programme covering basic bushcraft skills. Sessions can be booked separately, or book on all 4 sessions which will be progressive in developing your basic bushcraft skills and understanding.  We will address the four survival priorities, develop your use of sharp tools and each week revisit fire lighting, so you'll learn a variety of methods including the bow drill.  The programme will take place on the following dates with detail on each session plans: - 9th July - Learn the essential knots needed to make a tarp shelters, different tarp shelter designs will be presented with time to practice making your own tarp shelter. Introduction to fire lighting using a fire steel for ignition. Introduction to using a whittling knife to make make a peg and butter knife.  - 16th July - Learn how to make a tinder bundle using natural materials and how to ignite it using an ember. The embers will be made using a traditional flint and steel method, as well as the fire roll. You'll also learn how to make char cloth on the fire. Water filtration will be covered making improvised filters, whilst also looking at modern filters and the Millbank bag. We will also cover making natural cordage, where you can make your own using nettle or raffia.   - 23rd July - Learn how to use electrical and chemical methods to start a fire. Spend time developing your nature observation skills practicing your peripheral vision whilst being introduced to sit spots.  We will also be looking at using a saw and hatchet to split out a blank piece of wood to make a spoon using the traditional method of burning out the bowl with an ember.  - 30th July - Learn how to use a bow drill set to make an ember by friction and use it to ignite a tinder bundle. This day will be largely focused on developing campfire cooking, foraging for wild edible plants, making teas, using the dutch oven and cooking other campfire snacks.   Bring a packed lunch each day, with hot and cold refreshments available and some cooked snacks being prepared on the fourth session.   The proposed wooded site for these sessions will be a 10-15 minute walk from the car park along flat ground.
